The math

- How is a scrap gold price actually worked out?
- Three numbers: the karat the test reads (14k is 58.3% gold, 18k is 75%), the weight on the scale in grams, and the day's spot price per gram. Multiply them, apply the stated payout, and that is the offer. The ballpark estimator on the sell page does the same arithmetic so you can check it before you drive.
- Does 'best price' mean the highest number in town?
- It means a price you can verify. Every step — the purity reading, the weight, the spot figure, the payout — is shown, so you can compare it to any other quote line by line. A higher headline number with a refining fee taken off after is a lower price.
- What is the difference between a karat stamp and a tested karat?
- A stamp is what the maker claimed; the test is what the alloy actually is. Most stamps are honest, some are optimistic. The test settles it in front of you.
- Do you buy dental gold?
- Yes — it is tested and priced like any other alloy, and so are gold watch cases and pieces that are broken, bent or missing stones.
- Is this the same as 'cash for gold'?
- You are paid the same visit, so in that sense yes. The difference is how the number is reached: a cash-for-gold counter quotes a figure; this counter shows you the karat, the weight, the spot price and the buy rate, and the figure is what they multiply to. Same-day payment, measured price.
- Is there a minimum?
