Buy · Gold IRA

IRA-eligible metal from a counter you can drive to.

A precious-metals IRA holds physical gold, silver, platinum or palladium instead of paper — the same bars and sovereign coins in our case, held for you by an approved depository. The counter in Madison Heights supplies the metal; your custodian runs the account. You keep both choices.

The reason people put some of a retirement account into metal is the reason they hold metal at all: it is money nobody can print, it is nobody's promise, and it has historically kept its purchasing power while currencies lost theirs. Prices move in both directions — this is a description of the asset, not a forecast.

What we add is the part an online IRA dealer cannot: you can see the exact product before it is bought, have the fineness rules walked through in person, and price the order off the live spot board rather than a phone quote.

How the purchase works

Four steps, and you only drive over for one of them.

The rules are simple once they are laid out: the account has a custodian, the metal has a depository, and the dealer is whoever fills the order. Most people use an online dealer for that last step because they have never seen a counter offer it.

Bring your custodian's name and account number to a private appointment and the paperwork is handled at the table. If you are still choosing a custodian, we can tell you which ones we have worked with.

What qualifies

The IRS fineness rules, in one list.

American Eagles, Buffalos, Maple Leafs, Britannias, Philharmonics and carded LBMA bars are the everyday answers. The counter marks eligible pieces as such and will not put an ineligible one on an IRA invoice.

This page describes the rules in general terms and is not tax or investment advice. Eligibility and tax treatment depend on your account and your circumstances — confirm them with your custodian or a tax professional.

  • Gold — .995 fine or better (American Gold Eagle allowed by name)
  • Silver — .999 fine or better

  • Collectible and numismatic coins (rare dates, graded rarities)

Straight answers

Questions people ask before they drive over

What makes a coin or bar IRA-eligible?
The IRS sets a minimum fineness: gold .995, silver .999, platinum and palladium .9995, from a national mint or an accredited refiner — with the American Gold Eagle allowed by name despite being .9167. Most modern sovereign bullion coins and LBMA bars qualify. Collectible and numismatic coins generally do not.
Can I take the metal home?
Not inside an IRA. The rules require an IRS-approved custodian to administer the account and an approved depository to hold the metal. Metal you take home is a personal purchase, which is also fine — it is just a different account. The counter sells both.
Do you set up the IRA?
No. The account is opened with a self-directed IRA custodian of your choosing, and you fund it by contribution, transfer or rollover. Once it is open, the custodian issues purchase instructions and pays for the metal; we fill the order and deliver to the depository they name.
Is a rollover taxable?
A direct rollover or transfer from an existing IRA or 401(k) into a self-directed IRA is generally not a taxable event, but the details depend on the account type and your situation. This page is not tax advice — talk to your custodian or a tax professional before you move money.
